The numbered lines surely means the lines that have a number allocated to it such as 1,2,3,4.

What is confusing me where you say "NUMBERED line as well" ............. as well as what?
This is what Ed said "The chart for my lathe says for 10TPI I can use the numbers 1-8 on the half nut dial."

In his case that would be lines 1 - 3 - 5 and 7. In my case, my dial is marked with 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 with lines between also, so I would use those numbered lines (1,2,3,4) instead.

So the question remains.... which group of lines were actually being used? The numbered lines only, or all 8 of the lines?  
Too bad the written word doesn't convey the same precision that our machining specs do.
