So it was bad enough to cross the "I must use wine to dull the pain" threshold but not bad enough to cross the "Merits a picture" threshold.

Correct. It doesn't look all that bad. A blister formed under the nail and the nail got split but I didn't need to drill a hole in it to relieve the pressure so it's only a wussy smash. I know the razzing I'd have to endure if I were to post a picture.
