Good work John (as usual, ho-hum). Looks like the tap was pretty near bottomed when it broke. The casting is aluminum, right?
Did you give any thought to putting in a copper "bolt" once you pried the tap out and then welding over it and then onscrewing the bolt?
It helps to assure the alignment/position of the tapped hole is retained.
