Probably the best coal forge I've ever seen was a mobile one posted on IForgeIron. It was just a flat piece of 1/4" checkerplate with a thicker steel fire pot in the middle. No need for sides to get in the way of heating the middle of longer bars, the checkerplate keeps the coal in place.
