The only reason I ever needed to sharpen the wedge on my first splitter was due to the fact that it was about .125" to long (toward the pusher) . After the second "sharpening" with an angle grinder there was no further need.
My present splitter has a removable wedge that resides in a rectangular "socket" in the H beam.
That was done with the thought of changing the wedge to a "cross" style wedge in order to split junks into 4 pieces at one pass.
