Tackled repairing the damaged pinion that drives the carriage.
Cut a new gear from a salvaged strut rod.
Machined away the damaged gear.
Did a shrink fit with 1 1/2 thou interference.
For reassurance I drilled the joint a put a 1/16 spring pin in to act as a key.
Finished assembling it today.
Was a little worried the new cut gear might put a pattern in the surface if the teeth weren't formed correctly, but all seams to be fine.
Im getting about 1/2 thou taper in 8 inches. guess the tailstock needs tweaked.
The silence of it is a little unnerving after being accustomed to gear head lathes. All in all looks like its going to be a good machine.
