Mitutoyo DRO problems

Sounds like you narrowed down the problem, at least it has an actual switch, my Fagor uses push buttons on the pad. (turns itself on every time there's a power outage). Can you get into the switch with spray contact cleaner, or a bit redneck but maybe jumper the internal one and instal an inline switch.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.
