The above link will show you what I mean by centre distance calipers, as the legs are length adjustable you simply extend the fixed leg or even flip it so that the square end is at the measuring end, as the tips are both hardened and rarely used for measuring (the tips fall into the holes being measured and measuring happens up on the tapers) I feel Ok scribing VERY light lines with the points, I only ever scribe in dychem or similar so as not to wear the tips, but with a ball attachment and a HSS scribing blade I will be much happier.
