by making it out of segments I can keep the long grain of the wood running around the circle with all the glue joints staggered so that it doesn't blow apart when trying to turn it from a weak joint. with trying to turn it out of say a 4 X 12 to get a ring of wood 3/8 inch thick once you go pass a certain point in the wood you stand a chance of it breaking on you, and I only want to do this one time not three like the last pattern that I made.
