Well if you think of it this way if the edge is dull you have no choice but to remove material to reveal a new edge, that goes for any cutting tool.
Although i take care of files, endmills, drills etc i still consider them all consumables eventually they will be rendered useless through use, you have inadvertently fettled them away to nothing.
