Water will do the same thing, leave your old files out in the garden for a week or two and the cutting edge will be oxidized away works the same way as acid only slower.
I have my favorite files that i use all the time and i clean with a file card regularly then i wrap in rags and store, banging files around in a draw with other files next to them will blunt them pretty quick. I have purchased files from auctions for pennies and done the garden thing, its been very effective.
