I do the same thing Ken. You develop a sort of sixth sense after a while that tells you when you need glasses and when you don't. I've had to have metal dug out my eyes two times and both times were early in my career. I got a chip once without glasses when I was young and stupid, and once while wearing safety glasses and it didn't help. A hot spark from a grinder went through the side shield like it wasn't even there and welded itself to my cornea. It wasn't one of my favorite experiences.
