Here is my one and only DTI and was the first precision metrology tool that I purchased when I got my lathe. It is a Starrett 711 last word indicator, reading .005". I spent a lot of time searching and reading about DTIs and I saw that the 711 is loved by many and loathed by many! All the Interapids were going way above my budget and I didn't see many Mitutoyo ones at that time. I decided to take the plunge on the 711 after reading the information on the Long Island Indicator web site and speaking to one of the owners.
So far I have only used it to centre stock in my 4-jaw and to measure the play in my spindle, and I haven't had any issues yet. I picked up a kit in the red case with foam insert that was missing one item, (which may be the surface gauge attachment but I'm not sure) for $65 including shipping to Aus.
