You are not wrong there Ken. The missing chain sprocket that drives the feed gears I bought off the shelf and managed to get one that will give me a ratio that is near enough to the one on the similar lathe from up North. I have the cluster gear set and need to make a copy of these to go on the feed shaft. I have the gear that runs the longitudinal feed (needs a few teeth repaired) but the worm that rides the feed shaft and drives this gear is missing and needs to be made. The clutch and the gear that drives the cross feed need to be made as well.
I have a mate who is a machinist, who is currently working on some of these parts for me. I will have a go at making the worm, as my friend's 10" lathe is currently in my workshop (just replaced all the bearings and seals in the head) and has modal threading capabilities. The broken teeth I can fix but making regular gears is a little beyond me at the moment. As my mate doesn't have his own equipment, I need to wait until he has the time during work to make some of these parts.
To be honest, there isn't really a major rush, as this isn't how I make my money (thankfully). However, it will be very nice to have the longitudinal feed working. I can live with out the cross slide I think but eventually it would be nice to have.
The chips keep me on my toes! I think Walter should give away free shields with every pack of inserts purchased! When it is raining blue steel those long stringy chips don't seem so bad
