Stupid Old Man

Want to talk about stupid last week when home I got to play around with the new lathe, made a few cuts andf was very happy with the way it performed, nothying spectacular in machine work just enjough to check out the most of the functions. Been away for a week and got back home worked on the truck a bit then had some time to wash most of ther packing grease off the lathe. Used diesel and it worked admirablky well. Thought I would start on the motor project I picked, went to true up and size the block and could not get the lathe to work. Strange it was working when I left, nobody else in the garage/shop but the xyl and I know she wasn't playimg with it. Spent about an hour checking out the foot brake and electrics etc, puzzling I just could not get it to run until I found the stupid operator left the guard over the chuck up. Yes siree that will do it, never before used a modern lathe with all the safety cutoffs so that it will meet OSHA specs. Talk about an amateur, hopefully my memory will not let me make that mistake again hihi . Result being I did not get anything done, will sure take a while to accomplish anything at that rate. tom

What can I say

More important are you enjoying your new lathe? Mine is similar but a much older model.

We don't have many members at the moment, as the membership increases so will the postings and the pitter patter

I often sit here (on and off) for hours all on my own, I think when I'm up and ready to go everyone else has gone to bed or work.

I have (up to now ) resisted the temptation to register another ME.

Just think two DaveH's on here - perish the thought

Tom,

Don't fee too bad about it. That is a common mistake people new to machining make with the guards not being closed. You probably have another one on the door on the left side of the headstock where the gears are.

Wow that safety switch would drive me nuts, granted it's a short drive.

The chuck guard will at least keep you from cranking up the lathe with the chuck key in the chuck. A zip tie will usually defeat the switch with no permanent modifications should you so desire, but I didn't say that.

Yes there is another switch on the cover on the gear end as well as the foot brake I checked them all out when looking for my non-existent problem. Ed I should look at my lathe better it was sold as a 12x40 but will swing considerably more than 12 without removing the gap, IT looks a lot like your lathe and I understand in China most of the mfrs buy the castings from 1 or 2 companies that just do casting with no machining, perhaps the beds are the same. tom

Hi Tom,

My lathe was made in Taiwan so they are not likely from the same factory.
Maybe your lathe is really a 14x40 lathe rather than a 12x40. Either way, you've got a very nice lathe there.
