What to use...

I'm making an adapter for my Bromson mill to fit the X axis power feed I have to it. I need to make an adapter that will slip over a 1/2" dia shaft and step up to 5/8" dia for the gear and handwheel.

Ok, that's the background. I need to use 1" dia stock because of the bearings in the power feed. My question is... I have some 1" 304 Stainless I got from a Speedy Fire Sale and I have 1" 1018. Can I use the 1018 and not have a problem or should I use the 304?

Depends on your definition of a problem:

Is there a risk that it will rust - Yes, if you don't coat it.
Is there a risk it won't be strong enough - I don't think you have anything to worry about there but I'll leave the engineers to comment with authority Big Grin

I'd go with the 1018, just use some anti-seize compound during assembly. The idea that SS is stronger is somewhat misleading. It is tougher and that's why it can be difficult to machine, it also springs back from torquing better than 1018 which is one of the reasons you'll find it and monel frequently used in pump shafts.

IMHO save the SS for a more appropriate application.

I agree with going 1018 because 300 series stainless is rather famous for galling and welding itself to mating pieces in rotating applications. Only if the right kind of bronze is used (and I don't know what that is) will it be OK.

Yeah, I have the 1" 1018. But we'll be talking real soon.
