Slow progress is still progress Ed. This is something that you don't want to rush, as the consequences are serious. Whilst this is probably not going to be of much use here, here is a picture of the stand that I made to remove the head from the knuckle on my Kondia:
http://www.metalworkingfun.com/thread-57...l#pid42783 Perhaps if you have a large enough piece of round stock held in a collet, you could do the same. It really does make getting the head off and on so much easier, as the mill holds the weigh and you use the various axis to line everything up and keep it aligned and level.
