Checking My Nuts
Got some stuff today to help with getting my nuts back where they belong.

I like the reamer Ed, all my tapered ones are straight flute, that one might cut more aggressively.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.

The spiral flutes are supposed to push the chips forward so they are good for through-hole applications which mine will be.

This will be my first experience with tapered pins so we'll see how it goes. Couldn't be any worse than cutting an internal Acme thread I would think.  Yikes

I'm actually enjoying this nut thing. I've learned a fair amount while doing it and that's always a good thing. Smiley-gen163

Found a website (but lost the link) that had a calculator to give the drill sizes and depths to step drill the hole before reaming. On the smaller ones like this not so important. Had to do some tapered pins on a piece off a drilling rig a while back, Alfie bought the reamer it was about 3/4 inch dia at the big end. That one took some push to get it to cut.

I like those left hand spiral/right hand cut taper pin reamers. They work really well.

What I used to do before the days of computers and Google was measure the small end of the pin to be used. That was my drill diameter. Then measure the large end of the pin and lock the micrometer at that setting. Next, put the reamer within the anvils of the set micrometer and bring it to just touch. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the reamer about 1/8" (3mm) below that point.

Drill the hole and start reaming. When the reamer is in to the tape, test fit the pin. When the pin is dropping into the hole with about 1/16" above the top surface of the part I'm reaming, tap it home with a hammer. Done.

I was thinking of doing just that Ken. The masking tape thing I mean. Thanks for the tip on using the micrometer since I hadn't decided how I was going to find out the location for the tape.

I'm sure glad I decided to mock up the profile of the nut housing to make sure it clears everything. It didn't so I had to cut some corners.

Got the mill all back together today so now I can tackle making the nut holder.

This project is on hold until I get the new mill. There's some serious binding on the X axis when I put the mill back together with the crappy nuts so I could mill the holder. I'm not going to fight with it anymore. Besides, I've got a fair amount of work to do to get ready for the new mill which arrives in about two weeks.
