DC motor, power supply question

I bought a 1HP 24VDC motor this morning on a whim because it was $40.00 and lightly used. I though I could use it on my Horizontal Benchmaster mill (which I'm planning to convert to a CNC multi machine, lathe/mill, that's another post though Smile )

The data plate shows the motor as 24VDC 39 amps which as far as I can tell is almost a 1000 watts. I thought a power supply and speed controller would be easy to find and relatively cheap but that doesn't seem to be the case. I don't need the full 1HP as the original motor on the Benchmaster was 1/2HP, can I get away with say a 24VDC 600amp power supply? if so, what would the peak HP be at that rating?

I have been pretty busy with work but I'm already looking forward to getting back into my shop this Fall, to many projects left hanging with this early hot/dry summer  Big Grin

not to derail your motor thread but hows that hunk of bronze working out in your shaper?

Hi Dallen, I thought I posted a video of the shaper running with the new brass block in place? It's running great and the brass you sent is holding up really well. I just discovered the other day that the weird witness marks the tool was leaving on the return stroke was related to the crappy machine vise I was using. I put the heavy duty vice (I was hoping to send you till I found out the shipping was going to be near $400) on the Shaper and its cutting smooth and very quiet.

good, a shaper will leave a mirror finish if set up right,

was just wondering hadn't seen you around for a while.

If you have a 24V 600A power supply you don't need to worry about a half a horse! I'm assuming (dangerous, I know) that you were thinking 600 watts, not amps.

DealExtreme.com has a lot of power supplies and you can probably find a 24V 40A supply there pretty cheap. I just received a 12V 20A supply for my induction heater today, it cost me about $30 with free shipping. Also got some stepper drivers pretty cheap. Still waiting on the speed control for the mini-lathe (also cheap), should be here any day. It shipped a day or so later.

As to running it on half current, I'm not too sure that would work out so well. Seems the startup inrush would exceed the 20A rating.

The answer was so obvious I was blind to it. I'm going to use two 12VDC batteries hooked up in series and then just separate them to charge them up with a car battery charger. Doh
