Hello there KEN

Glad and truly appreciate that there are Guys like U around who have the patience and understanding to set us rookies on track.

It's back to the drawing board for us, or like more shopping, which unfortunately for us hurts the heart more than the pocket as we were really expecting a top notch high-feed deep cutting Tool.

Be that as it may, we will follow Your advices and get us one of those F4041's paired with the recommended inserts and hopefully report back soon with something more cheerful.

This one 'Walter F4041'.     it can be used for just facing though, because Ken suggested it. Big Grin  and you did use it for facing with one insert.

May be it should be called 'shoulder/face' mill Thumbsup

I think this is where Ken was talking about damaging the empty pockets if it is used as a shoulder cutter, can easily happen.

Anyway it doesn't matter what it is called  " a rose by any other name" Big Grin

I'm always willing to help. With you being in South Africa I know it's harder to get specific tooling. Chances are that you'd find a Walter cutter there or nearby that is a metric size, so those will also have a metric bore. Something in the 50mm size would have a 22mm bore, so you would look for an R8 to 22mm pilot diameter shell mill arbor.

For your application you might prefer a 45º lead angle face mill, such as the F4080 or F4033 like I have. Those both also have 8 edges, and the WKP25S grade is available for the D2 tool steel you are milling. Your limiting factor would be how much power (Kw, HP, Nm-m) does your spindle put out. There will be many options on them for insert size, tolerance and chipbreakers, number of inserts for a given size, depth of cut maximum, and grades.

Do you need a square shoulder cutter, or can you use a true face mill? How much power does your machine have? What is your typical depth of cut, what is the maximum that you'd want?

My only problem with Walter is they don't have an office here in South Africa. After sales could be troublesome maybe Iscar, Sandvik Coromant, Kennametal might be a better option if they have something similar the the Walter F4041.

I'm not trying to do Walter out of a sale - you have to look at it from your point of view.

We got the MTP90 from Carbide Depot in the States and if we have to get the Walter from "Flea Bay", well so be it. Have picked up some exceptional used tool Bargains there which would have cost me a small fortune here.

So long as we can get the R8 Spindle Mounting with it, we will be happy.

Our Mill runs on 3Phase 380 Volt Power and we are sure we have a 2HP Motor or maybe even bigger ??? Need to check that out in the morning.

At this point in time we are doing mostly True Face Milling requiring typical removal of some .0787" or 2.0mm and maybe slightly more. This is not a fixed routine job and can change on any given project. We doubt at this point in time we would ever need go beyond 5.0mm. It just depends on the job at hand and can't be put down to a hard and fast rule.

The idea is to get a good quality Face Mill to remove mass metal in the least amount of time with an acceptably decent finish requiring Surface Grinding only after Hardening.

Ideally. we would prefer and feel comfortable with using a max 2" Face Mill, not any bigger. We would loathe pushing the envelope with our machine which is some +- 9 Years with us. Made in Taiwan, it has served us well, although we have had some user-fault mishaps with it. We reckon Your F4041 would be the way to go, unless U feel otherwise ???
