I take it that a multi pitch thread won't do what your wanting?

Possibly, but my intuition (ha) suggests that the friction between screw and nut for a 3" pitch and.45-degree helix angle is going to overwhelm the forces I want to deliver to the clutch dog, and require a lot more pressure from the return springs, so there'd be a loss of feel In the control and it would necessitate much stronger detents. Admittedly the available tripping force (pushing the detent balls up the ramp of the ball sockets) is significant, being provided by a leadscrew, but the operating torque on the shaft control would be pretty high when operating it, which would be inelegant!
