Help with drawing a part

To answer your original question
Draw it in third angle projection, Front view, Side view and Plan.
After that you can add as many drawings (views) as you like to help clarify the job.

The most important part of the drawing is the dimensions and how they are related to each other.

Failing all this send a sketch (with dimensions) any views you like and some photos and I will guarantee Ken will be able to make it for you.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to try get it measured up over the weekend. Until then I'm not going to look into the BP part, as I know other parts on this mill look similar but are quite different.

If you go ahead and make a drawing, you could then consider sending me the part along with the drawing so I can verify dimensions as I make it. Having a 2 axis CNC will allow me to quickly mill and drill most of the features in one setup.

Well this bracket has been a bit more challenging to draw than I had imagined. Actually, it has been a challenge to measure it. I have been using the two machined faces on the back as my reference point. The bore running transversely through the bracket was the most difficult to establish the centre lines for and I'm not 100% that I have nailed it. The cast surfaces (as expected) are not reliable datum points.

I'd like some input on which hidden detail needs to be in which view. As I initially expected, it gets very messy if I put them all in. I've duplicated a couple of views in which I have excluded certain detail. In the top view, I've excluded the bore all together.

The side views are much easier to understand if the central bore and counterbore are shown only in one view and the screw holes in another. Is it acceptable to do it this way and do I need to indicate that a particular view is only showing partial detail?

Here is what I have so far. I've still got to add in the broken off parts and the aux view (still trying to figure that one out). Dimensions will be the final component.

Well I think that is one mighty fine drawing - really good.

I know the dimensions are still required and that can be the most difficult part of the drawing.
Taking measurements off parts is always difficult and sometimes one never gets the same measurement twice
Also look at where this part is going and if need be take some measurements.

I think that's fine Darren. I do that if there are a lot of hidden features. I don't know if it's acceptable/standard drafting practices but since I'm creating my drawings for my eyes only then I make the drawing so I can understand them.

Ken's a smart guy so I'm sure he can use those drawings to make the part, especially if he has the existing part in hand.

I agree with your assessment of Ken and his abilities Ed, and I will be sending him the part so he can check anything that may be missing or poorly drawn. However, I'd like to know how to do this 'correctly'. After all, I will be placing a lot of faith in Australia Post and USPS if I get it wrong!

Amazing how much detail can be in what first appears to be a simple looking part. The curved line in your rear view (far right), is that required, or is it where the casting broke, looks like it from the photo of the part.
