Todays Project - What did you do today?
I find screw cutting in the lathe a very relaxing thing to do
You can only think about the job in hand
Very well done on your first thread DroolDroolDrool

I agree with all of the compliments Larry. Those are some very nice looking threads indeed.

Can you tell us about the tooling you used, the cutting speed, material and your method of measuring them to know they were within standard specifications?

Hi Ken,
Well now you want to put me to the real test!
Tooling is a hand ground HSS cutter.
Cutting speed was slowest in back gears, my chart says 20RPM, however the chart did not come with the lathe.
Material is W1 tool steel.
Method of measuring may not be up to snuff. I looked up the outside dia. in SB's "How To Run A Lathe" and turned to that dia.. I had threaded rod and nuts to refer to as well. I ran the threads until I could thread the nut on. Then I hit the crest of the thread with a mill file and I chased a small triangular needle file down each thread until the nut turned on very smoothly. (I suspect the needle file may be cheating???)
I suppose that is LJP specifications and not Standard Specifications. I will be more careful next time!
Thanks, Larry

Sounds like you need to invest in a set of thread wires Larry. Then you can make the thread to size without the mating part in hand.

Yeah, the nuts here go on and on and on....

Plus the threads fit the mating parts he had in hand. Big Grin

OK, so I don't want threads that are not properly measured! Ever! Ever!

Please confirm that the following is correct (or incorrect).
In my newly acquired 15th Edition (1956) Machinery's Handbook, I find a table that gives "Dimensions Over Wires...US Standard".
For a 7/16- 14 thread I should use .050 wires, and have a diameter of 0.4793 as measured over the wires.
Thanks, Larry
