Selecting A Parting Tool

You could also use more speed if desired, and that would put more heat into the chips. Anytime you can get the chips running straw to blue color, you're carrying most of the heat out of the cut with the chips and saving the workpiece and stock from getting hot.

I really don't know all that much, just know how to put on a good show. I'm in sales, remember? Rotfl

Ken,

Yup, I could have definitely gone with a higher RPM. I was running at 755RPM with a .003" feed rate. I think I'll try it again with a 1050RPM at a .004" feed rate. Closer to what you recommended originally.

Should you see a need to get deeper cutoff capacity, I'd encourage you to keep your eyes open for a deal on this exact same type of tool holder. I have 3 of them, and they get a lot of use. There are two most common sizes of the indexable insert blades for these. I have two that take the smaller 1" (26mm) blades and can also use down to 7/8" HSS blades, and one that takes the larger 1-1/4" (32mm) blades. The blades don't have

There may be a blade from Kennametal that takes those GS inserts, though I've never seen one. Their standard offering is the "A2" system for spring clamp single ended inserts. I use the Valenite "VSG" (single ended) and now obsolete "VTG" (double-ended) systems, though they are compatible with the Sandvik Coromant's 151.2 (single-ended) and 123 (double-ended) systems and I'll be able to get inserts for long time.

I don't recall which size QCTP you have on your lathe, but it appears from the video that it may be the "BXA/200/25" size that accepts up to 5/8" tools. If so, here's the Dorian holder that you'd be on the lookout for:

Thanks Ken. That was going to me my next question. What type for deeper parting. I'll keep on the lookout for one of those. I do have a BXA size QCTP as you assumed. Is there any additional tricks to be aware of when using the blade type parting tool versus the one I already have?

The setup on the right of Kens picture is what I have. Works great.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.

Here's a link to an Ebay item that is the BXA size. Not cheap, but still the best price I've seen for a quality Dorian tool.

Ebay item

You would want the single ended insert style blade from the maker of your choice. I love having the double ended one on the left in my photo, it's only 1.5mm (.059") wide and is ideal for small diameter stuff. The single ended one on the right in my photo is a wider 4mm insert, good for heavier duty parting operations. I have other monoblock tools in 2.5mm, 3mm and up to 1/4" wide. That's only because I get on a kick every now & then and buy a bunch of tools to eat up any profit I may have made in the shop.

Ken, if I was to win the lottery I'd love to get an insert holder with some inserts for each of those 2 sizes and maybe I could also afford that BXA size toolholder too. With a few close up shots I could prolly make the toolholder when I get around to making up the 20 or 30 I plan on. Any idea what those insert holders and inserts cost?

Amazon had it for the same price and I was able to use a $50 gift card so got it for $86.

Thanks for the advice on what to get Ken. Thumbsup

Nicely done, Ed!

Now to find a blade and inserts. From the Dorian catalog I just downloaded (thank God they finally updated their horrible website!), it appears that your blaock takes the harder to find 3/4" blades.

I know some people have reasonably good success with the old Iscar origin "GTN" (plus left and right hand GTL and GTR) inserts, I just don't like them at all because they don't have the positive stop that the Valenite VG101 16 20 does. That blade lists for $115.00, and takes a wide range of insert styles from both Valenite and Sandvik Coromant in widths from .059 to .098". Another option is Kennametal A2BNSN19X0116, using A2 style inserts. I didn't have time to look at their insert offerings, but I know it's extensive.

Doing a quick search, I found these at carbidedepot.com.

$103.50 Valenite VG101 16 20 Seat size 20
$82.45 Kennametal A2BNSN19X0116 Seat size 1
$82.45 Kennametal A2BNSN19X02 Seat size 2

Looking at the MSC web site for the Kennametal inserts, it appears that seat size 1 only takes .063" wide inserts and the seat size 2 only takes the .087" wide inserts. So it sounds like the Valenite would be my best option if it takes a wider range of insert sizes.
