Shop Press

The press is the most used tool in my shop. The "goto" is the arbor Press, it has so much better "Feel" If I find that I can not budge it with the 5 Ton Arbor press, then I set up the 50 Ton H frame press and go at it. I have to be careful as by the time the pressure guage on the 50 Ton registers, whatever I am pressing is already flat, bent or mangled.

I used to have a 12 Ton Crown and Pinion H Frame Press, unfortunately no photos survived that I know of. As you turned a 3 foot diameter handwheel, it turned a small pinion gear which then turned a large crown gear (think rear end of car). The inside of the crown gear was threaded with an Acme thread and it moved the press ram up or down. This press, although very slow, also had good "feel"

One of the most important items with presses is the fixtures that go with them. Round collars or sleeves of various diameters. Various diameters of shafts. Bearing knives, or splitters, vee plates. Universal Press Support fixture, which is a plate with tapped holes and some studs etc.

I found these tools made by Mueller Kueps in Germany. Seem to be sold under a couple of different names including Getme-tools and AME.

Very pricy but could be shop made. There are you-tube videos of them in these links.

Make sure the item to be pressed is supported firmly so that it cannot shift while force is applied and that all squishy items like fingers, toes etc are not in pinch points.

Thanks for the more links Walter. Here is a gear that someone tried to remove with a wedge and a hammer and broke the shaft as it was cast. I found it in the dumpster and thought the gear would look good in my junk box...Bob

Dug some more and found the 14 1/2* PA rack that the gear rode on. Might make another little arbor press with it...Bob

D'ya mean something like this.

   

The rack is 10 dp 14½ °.
I haven't yet determined the wall space on which to mount it.
I also haven't added the air/hydraulic foot operated pump to my hydraulic press. So much to do, so little time

Made the tooling rack but the 1" bars just fell thru the 1" punched holes. So i bored some 1" threaded nuts out and added a set screw to lock them to the shaft. That way the nuts act as keepers holding the bars in the rack...Bob

Nice idea the tooling rack, did you punch the 1'' dia holes in it?

Yes i "borrowed" an ironworker to punch the holes. I was going to drill them but saw some time savings...Bob
