Those are fun old scopes. Does the foldback go away with the intensity down? Looks like it's a bit high in that pic.

The foldback seems to be there no matter what settings I mess with. I'm wondering if the final tube will make a difference. I checked the values of the capacitors and didn't find any that were out of spec.
I don't think much is out of wack in the voltage circuitry. It would take an interesting phenomenon in the time-line generation to start at a higher voltage, slowly drop back a bit, then increase voltage in a relatively normal fashion. Turns out the tube I'm waiting for is the first one in that circuit.
Interesting how new projects have a way of finding you.

Y'know how I was mentioning in a previous post about still needing a bigger mill? Well I don't need one any more. Found this on Marketplace, got it for $600. Brought it home yesterday, haven't powered it up yet, just got it in place late last nite. No pics of it in place, took one but too much light from outside, can't even tell it's a mill, so I'll snap some at nite.
Anyway it's an Index Model 40H. Still figuring out what things do on it. Came with a nice big vise too!
Here it is on the trailer coming home, we stopped at an AutoZone on the way home.

Ed, table is 22" but has the bowls (?) on each side to collect coolant with a hole to attach a hose to.
Willie, thanks for the manual links, there are also links on the Wells-Index website but I never thought to look at the model 40 manual, which contains a bunch more info than the 40H book.
Stan, I don't think we've had a You Suck around here in a while! I'm honored!
I did power it up, the motor was swapped out for a 110/220V single phase motor a number of years ago. When the guy I got it from got it from his brother (who got it from his dad), he never used it. Anyway, when I power it up, the motor spins up to speed, you hear a click and it spins down to about half the RPM, then another click and it spins back up again. When it's spinning down it sounds like power was cut. Wondering if maybe the run cap is bad...
Anyway, from what I've discovered, it has a power spindle feed, but the belt is missing (19" x `1/2"), shouldn't be hard to find, at worst I have a factory part number and Wells-Index is still around.
I also need to make or buy a couple of cranks or wrenches for it. Square drive for vise and head tilt are missing.
The fun of exploring a new toy!!!

And I'm happy to say I found the reason for the motor acting squirrely. There's a bad pulley bearing, new one is on order and should be here in a couple of days!
