Moulding Flasks ,,, Steel - RobWilson - 02-26-2012 Hi Lads I made a few steel moulding flasks for my foundry set up a few years ago ,, in the past i have always used wood flasks , these are fine , but can were out quickly ,and do burn when you have a spill . As with nearly all of my projects they come about due to getting some free material . I scrounged a few 1/8" x 4 1/4" steel off cuts from a customer i was doing a bit work for . First off i need to form a bead up the centre of the strips so that the sand will have something to key to , so i came up with a quick and dirty swag tool for my home built shop press . The lengths were fead through 6" at a time to form the bead. Next up ,, four bits of 4" steel bar were tack welded to the welding bench to form a bending fixture . Using oxy gear the bends were heated and bent . The overlap was then trimmed and welded. RE: Moulding Flasks ,,, Steel - RobWilson - 02-26-2012 Re bar was used for handles Then the locating pins made and welded on . Rob RE: Moulding Flasks ,,, Steel - Mayhem - 02-26-2012 Wow - those 4" section of steel rod put things into perspective. Nice work Rob. Thanks Darren My bad ,,, i think they may be 3" Rob RE: Moulding Flasks ,,, Steel - Mayhem - 02-26-2012 So what are the final dimensions of those flasks Rob? I think they came out at 12" x 16" ,,,i will go measure them Rob RE: Moulding Flasks ,,, Steel - DaveH - 02-26-2012 Rob, They came out rather splendid. Nice beading, really nice piece of work. Nicely posted as well DaveH RE: Moulding Flasks ,,, Steel - ETC57 - 02-26-2012 Rob, Nice job on the flasks but how did you keep the rib from going flat when you bent it? when ever I try something like that the bead or rib as I tend to call them go's flat in the corner. I don't see any distortion in yours at all. Looks great!! Jerry. RE: Moulding Flasks ,,, Steel - EdK - 02-26-2012 Rob, Nice welding. How was it welding the re-bar? I was told not to bother trying to weld re-bar because it doesn't weld worth beans. I think I may have been led astray based on how good it appears to have welded for you. Weldinbg rebar is ok it is just a low grade steel, the weld is usually much stronger thyan the rebar so one can't depend on the strength in a butt weld at least that's the way it was explained to me. n tom |
