cutting gears - dallen - 07-01-2012

I am wanting to cut some gears, now this subject is just full of math which I lack a bunch of.
What I am hoping is that someone has or knows a formlua that I can use to calculate the outside diameter of gear blanks.

the reason for this madness is that I am missing some of the change gears for my lathe an I figure that I may as well learn how to cut them so that I can make what I need, but for the life of me can't seem to figure out how to calculate the blank size.

thanks in advance
David

I don't have the experience to help but will be watching with interest.

I recall seeing an online calculator that did numerous things with regards to gears. I'll check when I'm home to see if I book marked it.

Hi David - Give Metal Shop Calculator a go.

Here is a screen shot of the gear page from the version I am running:

It also has some other good features which I find useful.

Here's a calculator for gear stuff. It's at the bottom of the web page.

cheap chinese import involute cutters cause they won't completely empty the wallet. and I should be able to cut a gear in two passes one roughing and a finish pass of a couple thousands
