Ed,
Do you have a draw bar? I was planning to make one for my ER40 chuck but then I found out that it is possible to buy extra long machine bolts. I bought mine from a local outfit called McFadden-Dale. I'm sure McMaster-Carr also sells them. One bolt cost $15 but it saved me the trouble of machining a draw bar. I added a shoulder washer I made that centers the head of the bolt on opening at the headstock end.
This is similar to what I used except mine was black oxide steel. Obviously a bigger lathe will require a longer bolt.

That's not really a drew bar needed on that ER 40 unit. All you need is something to back up the hold of the taper. A piece of all-thread, couple of nuts and washers will do. The collet is tightened with the nut on the front. I jist use the thru spindle stop I made.

I don't have that collet chuck in the picture I posted. I just posted it as an alternative source for someone looking. I have this ER-40 collet chuck for my lathe.

The same dealer also has the ER40 wrench for $13. Here's my complete setup. It cost me $80. It does have one disadvantage over Ed's chuck pictured earlier. You can only grip short stock while Ed's chuck will allow you to feed long bar stock through the chuck.

Since I don't have any ER-40 collets yet, there's very little incentive to tackle that project yet. And yes, it's long and daunting. Ah, the list that is.
