Variable speed, 8in bench grinder - pepi - 06-14-2019 Anyone in the market for a grinder, have a close look at the Jet offering. Thing is a beast and very smooth, opted for the LED work light . Wheel covers cast, have ports in the rear. A manifold connects the two sides, with a single port to attach a dust collector/vac. [attachment=16252] Came with 2 stone wheels, install the wire. [attachment=16251] Even @ 58 bucks worth the money, contemplating buying 2 more to add the lathe & mill. The flex next is very stiff stay where it's placed, light source focused, via a lens. Pep RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - arvidj - 06-14-2019 Pepi, Do you have a link to where you got it? Thanks, Arvid RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - pepi - 06-14-2019 I bought it from MSC, I wanted to be sure to get a factory new machine. Jet shipped it came out of Tenn. one week it was here. Looked at eBay and was unsure of the machines offered, to many bait and switching if one reads closely. Some were 220 wired, not a problem cause the grinder is 110 & 220, grinder will run 900 rpm. Hit the power off, ginger stops & power goes off a min or so later, speed adjust 100 rpm increments. Did I mention quiet, high speed you hear the wheels pushing air. The Light I did buy from ebay, the work light has a huge price range 58 to a high of 75. Hope this helped, happy hunting Pep RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - Vinny - 06-18-2019 How does it do on a HSS tool bit? The last inexpensive grinder I bought would almost come to a stop. I found an old 3 phase grinder on craigslist, added a static phase convertor and works great. Oh, one good thing that grinder was good for was to vibrate a mold. When I'd make something out of hi temp ceramic, the mold had to be vibrated to get the air pickets out. That cheap grinder was great for that! RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - pepi - 06-18-2019 Given the fact that I use replaceable carbide tips for the lathe and send my mills out to be ground. I have no answer, but I can tell you stalling the thing is out of the question. I remember the LED ring you placed on the mill, considered the idea. The work lamp that I purchased from jet is very bright, the beam is focused on the work piece no shadows. Also the flex neck stiff stays put. Have you ever read how to true the wheel face of a grinder. Never saw it explained, have adapted the procedure, slick. Pep RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - TomG - 06-19-2019 Hmmm, don't see any kind of JET offering on MSC. Was there an expiration date on the sale? Tom RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - Vinny - 06-19-2019 The work lamp is made from a BMW replacement headlamp. I'm guessing these are the DRLs (daytime running lamps). I have to have a very large cutter on the mill to get any shadows, probably bigger than this little mill can handle. LEDs sure have gotten brighter in more recent years. I remember around 35 years ago getting a sample kit from HP of thier High Intensity LEDs. We lit a room with one red one. Now that thing is dim compared to what's out there. In shop class I learned how to true a wheel, my dad also showed me. My current grinder is quiet* and no vibration at all, that cheapo I had was just that, cheapo. Very poorly made and although I didn't check, it wouldn't surprise me if a dial indicator on the shaft showed problems. Until I replaced it, that thing was good for only one thing, vibrating that mold! * My current grinder isn't completely quiet, since it has a static phase convertor on it you can hear the motor a little. RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - Highpower - 06-19-2019 What I don't understand is if you are going to go all out on cast wheel covers, why put cheap sheet metal work platens and eye shields on it? Every consumer grade bench grinder made in the last couple of decades has a **** work RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - pepi - 06-19-2019 (06-19-2019, 06:36 AM)TomG Wrote: Hmmm, don't see any kind of JET offering on MSC. [attachment=16258] V Be sure to see p14 Good tip, one I've never seen or heard of before. Used it on the 8'' Craftsman var-speed this jet has replaced. What does some bmw part, that is sourced btw have to do with anything ? ::ba Vinny put a steel wire wheel on that craigslist heap. It will clean up steel, knocks off slag and rust in a heart beat, @ 900 rpm. Will help out your welding ... considerably [attachment=16259] Pep RE: Veriable speed:8in bench grinder - Vinny - 06-21-2019 (06-19-2019, 10:43 PM)pepi Wrote: Vinny put a steel wire wheel on that craigslist heap.
