Surface grinding wheels and surface finish. - Viperspit - 06-04-2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjz0Zt76GJ4&lc=z12ugf3yylq4t3xvm22stdqzawe0fvkqs04 This is a 27 minute video showing the results of using different wheels and grits and the surface finish they leave. We used 46 ruby, 46.2 white aluminum oxide 60 ruby ceramic mixed and a 120 ruby wheel. some are open structure others are closed. The 46.2 white aluminum oxide and 60 ruby ceramic mixed gave the best finish. I recently acquired a vintage manually operated surface grinder, and for someone like me who is just an amateur home shop machinist, I find this is valuable information. Thanks ! Here is a photo of the Alfred Herbert machine I have, and now realize what selection of wheels will be necessary for future use. Thanks for the feedback. That's a nice clean looking machine. I never heard of that brand before. Have you used it yet? How does she cut? Steve RE: Surface grinding wheels and surface finish. - Mike E. - 06-05-2017 Its a British made machine, a late model Herbert Jr.. There's information about it and photos on the list at http://www.lathes.co.uk . Scroll down the page to "Grinders on the right hand side. I haven't used it yet, as it went straight into my rental storage unit after purchase. My new garage/workshop is still at the foundation stage, so I'll have to let you know how the grinder works once I get moved in and the shop electric's are sorted out. |
