I've never seen an iron casting so thin. Thanks for pointing out the video. Tom RE: something different - rleete - 11-13-2016 Interesting. Wish it had English subtitles. RE: something different - RobWilson - 11-13-2016 Very interesting video Liquid iron is VERY fluid , so much so it was used to cast jewellery in the early 1800's , very fashionable in Europe and some parts of North America . All started buy the death of a Prussian queen . Here are a few examples displayed in the Vienna technical museum , The skill involved in such work Rob RE: something different - awemawson - 11-13-2016 Pretty amazing detail n those Rob. I believe high phosphorous iron was chosen for thin / fine detail but it is exceptionally fragile, cracking with a characteristic white broken edge RE: something different - RobWilson - 11-13-2016 I must have spent a good hour looking at those pieces , the detail is really outstanding Andrew High Carbon content increases fluidity , no chance of machining it glass hard Rob RE: something different - Dr Stan - 12-05-2016 That had to be made using the lost wax, or similar, casting technique. The fourth pic from the top is a perfect example of what is known as a tree in lost wax casting. |
