Stepper Motor Question - Vinny - 01-28-2016

I've decided to automate my cheap CDCO rotary table. I have all the electronics except the stepper motor. Well I have a stepper motor but it's WAY too big for this, which is fine 'cuze it's really intended for some level of CNC on my 7x.

So I'm looking at steppers. Is a NEMA 17, 40 oz/in motor sufficient to drive a rotary table?

I had the same question years ago. It was pointed out that the worm on my table was 90:1 so the big deal was the need to overcome the friction rather than overcome what ever mass based inertia from what might be on the table. A NEMA 23 was recommended. I have the motor, the tables, the stepper driver and the controller ... http://www.worldofward.com/rotarycontroller/ ... but have not gotten a round-to-it to try it out.

I have a NEMA 23 stepper motor if you want one for the cost of shipping.

I used a NEMA23 with my Arduino setup to control a 4" Vertex RT, which is 90:1. Works great. I have made several gears with it.

Depending on the length, I will probably take you up on that. PM about to be sent.

Thanks Everyone!!!
