Rod Bender Plans - EdK - 12-27-2015

Anybody have plans for a rod bender? I'd like to make one that can bend up to 1/2" mild steel rod. I've used Mr Google and found some but none that peaked my interest.

Hi Ed,
They come in all sorts and sizes. To bend 1/2" it needs to be fixed well to something, you may be able to hold it in your vise (the bending jig) if the vise is suitability securely fixed.
Or have you thought about using your press. Like this http://weldingweb.com/showthread.php?42378-Bending-1-2-quot-round-bar&s=01fbfa82b7793a7cea6d1186ce6e6956&p=399031#post399031

Dave,

I would be fixing to an upright in the basement that's carrying the load of the house so it should be plenty stout. It's something that I'd set up as needed. Thanks for the link.
I was looking at this one which might do 1/2" rod. I suppose I could beef it up to make sure it'll handle it though.

I've had this one for years Ed. It has Vee'd jaws for round stock and different dies for varying radius bends. Bends 1/2 round effortlessly, think its 1/4 x 4 flat it will bend. I have it mounted on a 2 inch square tube that goes into a receiver on one of the columns of the shop.

Any chance you could post a picture of that sometime Greg? I've been trying to figure out a way of mounting a flat bar bender in a non-permanent manor to a vertical I-beam. I'm liking your idea! Drool

This isn't a great picture Willie but should give you some ideas.

There are two mounts here, the one the slip roll is in comes straight out from the column, the one the vice is in allows you to go cross wise. They're 2 1/2 square tube with a 3/16 wall, 2 inch square on the vise and slip roll slip in the same as a receiver hitch on a truck. They're cross drilled for a locking pin as well. Have mounts for these, the bender I mentioned and a motorized chuck for welding.

Thanks Greg. Thumbsup

I'm liking the cross-wise receiver. The only thing is I don't want to weld anything directly to the I-beam. I guess I could make a "sandwich" using a couple pieces of plate steel with the beam in the middle, and tie them together with some threaded rod. Then I could just weld the receiver to one of the plates. Smiley-think005

Great.... another project for the list. Slaphead Big Grin

And now, I'm thinking that I could use the sandwich idea to attach to one of the 6x6 posts in the garage. It would be easy enough to roll the wood shaper out of the way, and then I could get a bender...

You guys...

I don't have any poles out here but I do have a press and that press version looks interesting. Don't have a need right now tho. Watch, now that I said that I'm gonna need one next week!
