Tool post grinder idea , belt sander upgrade. - Kennyv - 06-16-2015 Well played hooky today it was nice to have day off .....didn't get much done but enjoyed every minute piddling around in the garage lota ideas lota starting dif projects . Mr Ups man came and brought me a nice package of some new index-able mills. Organized my insert boxes took inventory of what needed and even thought of a few new ideas for collet wrack tool ,wrack . Next on the to do list. WIP (work in progress) Now My first priority is to get my but moving assembling this bench idea I have . So to get all the bench tools functional again. That way I can get something done .Hope that made sense..lol Well went out hunting tonight and came back with a few things that may just help . I was fishin on Craigs list and just so happened to find something of interest . The guy was a mile away how could I resist. taking a look right? Anyways.I caved in guys well lets say compromised. I wanted to build a belt sander . And than this happened Yea an underpowered chepo delta .......... sooooooo I guess for now I will modify the one I just scored on. Most likely im gona use a 3/4 HP grinder and modiphy with external belt and pulley. Else ill caddy the two machines and use the drive off the shaft of grinder. What do you all think? Hey have a look of this old BD 1-1/2 HP router . I smell a tool post grinder on that one . What do ya all think ? And check this out an Old Craftsmen 10 amp 1-3/4HP Circular saw .Thats a bull of a motor I could not pass up the deal . Any ideas what I can make of it? Metal Chop saw ? What else may be practical ? Be creative but dont joke about it. Seriously im looking for ideas to make something useful for the shop. RE: Tool post grinder idea , belt sander upgrade. - PixMan - 06-17-2015 It took a little bit of studying the photo of the circular saw that photobombed the intended target to see the belt sander and router. I have Delta sander just like that in my shop. It works fine just the way it is, and has for the 7 or 8 years it's been there. I'd leave it alone and just use it. The router would be hard to turn into a toolpost grinder because of it's bulk. It wouldn't be impossible, but you would have to either hang it way off to the tailstock side and make a spindle extension for direct drive, or fabricate a bulky bracket and still have to build a spindle and pulley drive system. RE: Tool post grinder idea , belt sander upgrade. - TomG - 06-17-2015 You may be able to strip down the router to just a motor to make it smaller, but 1 1/2HP is a lot for a tool post grinder. You would have to watch the rpm's as well, so as to not over speed the wheel. Tom RE: Tool post grinder idea , belt sander upgrade. - Kennyv - 06-21-2015 Hey thanks Guys . I didn't know you replied till now guess I didn't click follow post .. thanks again for your inputs its nice to know someone does read my long winded ramblings well as far as the projects they are further along on my to do list however I like figuring that stuff out. im not that technical I think..lol...I think im rather primitive however I think maybe ole fashion and like things with simple design. Works ez to fix maintain not all the bells an whistles However new design sometimes is better more efficient so I like to like to examine something get some info learn and than by trial and error get there myself , fix it build it figure it out rather than follow the rules . I like buying new things but everything today is either and arm and leg or its junk or its expensive and still junk..... as they don't make stuff like they used to. Ill use the sander as is for now unless it bogs down . and as far as the router ..I do plan on making a holder for it . That way it can be used 2 fold. But if I know myself if I come across if and when I may need a tool pots grinder it may become an experiment learning experience when I rip it apart.....lol......im kinda looking for someone who may have pioneered and explored that area already that way I can at least have something to digest and stay on the coat tails of a successful working idea . So how about the saw ? any ideas of something may be useful ? I only paid five bucks for it so if I rip that apart in a failed experiment it wont be a total loss. The way I see it at least it will keep me busy for a while ...lol...... thanks again for any input....... back to brain storming .
