Flaring the conical end of a metal ring - DLANDINO - 06-19-2014 I have a question about metal working and I was wondering if you have any idea of a tool or tools that can be used to flare out the tapered end of a metal ring. I started making rings out of silver US and foreign coins as a hobby and it seems that people love them. So when I poke a hole in the ring and bang it down a mandrel the ring ends up being conical in shape until you flare out the narrow end. I have been using a dapping block to do this but can damage the ring if not done right. I was searching for a hand operated tool that can widen the narrow part. This is an example of the work I have been doing so you can see what I am talking about. RE: Flaring the conical end of a metal ring - f350ca - 06-19-2014 Maybe the cone of a flaring tool? RE: Flaring the conical end of a metal ring - 12345678910 - 06-19-2014 How about the roller tool used to size rings ? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MSDGd44AdXk/Ud3rKHZUw5I/AAAAAAAAEv0/UpU9uXKi1OQ/s1600/ring_sizer.JPG RE: Flaring the conical end of a metal ring - aametalmaster - 06-19-2014 I can make you a wee little roller with wheels that won't damage the part...Bob RE: Flaring the conical end of a metal ring - aametalmaster - 06-19-2014 That is a cool ring btw..Bob RE: Flaring the conical end of a metal ring - DLANDINO - 06-19-2014 Thanks for the compliment Bob. RE: Flaring the conical end of a metal ring - TomG - 06-20-2014 I was going to suggest a roller as well, but it would take something a little special. I assume you are starting with a washer shaped piece and forming it into a cylinder, so it would take three rollers with the center one able to tip a bit to put more pressure on the inside edge of the washer than the outside, to raise the it into the cylinder shape. You have raised my curiosity, so I may be forced to try it out. Tom |
