Sutton LockJaw self adjusting locking pliers - Mayhem - 07-20-2013
I was at a tool show a few weeks back and saw some Australian made locking pliers by Sutton Tools that I noticed didn't have the adjustment screw like all the others I have. Upon inspection and reading the info on the packaging, these pliers use a tension spring to allow them to grip anything within the range of their jaws. There is a small thumb screw that sets the desired force of the grip and after trying them out, I bought two 175mm and two 275mm C Clamp style pliers with swivel pads. The price was comparable with what we pay for the ubiquitous 'vice grip' copies.

After using them for a few weeks I must say that I really like them, especially for welding and I will get some more into the future. They make the full range of styles and there is a video of them being used on their web site.

Dave - click the link at the bottom of my original post and it will show the C Clamp style. Beneath the photo, there are two thumbnail images. Click on the second and that will show the ones I have.

I have a couple of pairs without the pads. Great for clamping edge guides for the plasma cutter and holding parts to weld. The auto set is great but they won't pull parts together, once the jaws touch they start the tensioning from there.

These ones will pull edges together Greg. You can set the firmness of the grip with the adjustment screw. I have mine set, so you need the final squeeze to close them up - just the same as my ViseGrip ones.

They look interesting Darren, but where were they when I started amassing the 18 Vice Grip clamps I now have.
