Nice welds indeed, and I also like the look of the wood in there.

Ed - as Ken pointed out it is a add in of mine. I wanted to keep the bottom shelf separate and adding in that cross member also gives me the anchoring point for the piece of mesh that will occupy one of the three bottom sections for odd size stock.
At first I wasn't going to worry about putting wood into the front section where the stock stands upright. However, given that I got plenty of free off-cuts from my friends timber flooring business, I decided to put them in the front as well.
Once I get the mesh tacked in, all it needs is a lick of paint.

In my head it is going to be bent into a U shape and extend down from two of the low shelf supports. This way if you have a length of stock that is shorter than the height of the second shelf, it will stand up in the rack and not fall over backwards or sideways.

This is from one of Ken's posts (post # 8) Access to the shelves is interesting as the rack fills. Because the heavier stuff tends to be shorter, as you get to the upper shelves they're still fairly open. The bottom (which isn't actually a shelf) has to be accessed from the side because the lowest part of the rack is so "densely populated."
Got me thinking. So if mine isn't against the wall I should have access to the shelves from the rear
(Provided it doesn't fall on me). Further thinking I arrived at this. A double sided stock rack

Till you fill up the front and back and still have to get to the smaller ones thru the side.

You can always make it three sided, then you won't have to worry about getting access to an open end.
