Today's bone-head move by yours truly: Bash

I started making a jig for my carbide grinder. Simple enough. 6061 flat stock, and I milled a tang into the bottom that slides in the slot on the grinder table(s). Then I drilled a few holes in the top that serve as pivot points to grind different radius' on my scraper blades.

Then I thought I would add a couple of 30° slots in the jig up front, for grinding HSS V-threading lathe tools on the other side of the grinder. All was going well. I had one slot done and completed the first pass on the second slot. I stopped the mill to clean out all the chips before taking the final cut in the second slot. This was all done standing in front of, or to the right side of the mill as I normally do.

Then I moved to the left side of the mill to get a better look at the end of the slot, because the chips would get packed into the dead end and block my view of where the slot stopped. OK... everything is clean and has a clear path, cutter is set to the correct depth, and located away from the edge of the part. Turn on the machine and start cranking on the X-feed handle -- BAM! Yikes

Then I look up and see that as I was standing on the "wrong" side of the mill, I turned the power switch on with my "wrong" hand - the wrong way! (Reverse)

Don't feel bad Willie, I once broke a 1 1/2" end mill my first day on a new job and the mill wasn't even running. I hit the rapid traverse lever on the mill thinking the cutter was clear of the work. Well guess what, it wasn't. To make matters worse, it sounded like a shotgun going off so everyone in the shop had to come over and see what the new idiot kid did. 17428

When I first got the mill I had a bad habit of hitting the power feed and forgetting to unlock the gib on the table. So I made myself some labels and stuck them on the front of the mill head to remind me. "Check table locks!"

I'm running out of fingers to count how many times I've done it since then... Blush Rotfl

I forgot the quill lock. Left it loose while cutting a Dovetail/ Not pretty.

Not metal work but this has been keeping me busy for the last week. Kitchen cabinets for a reno, Elm, nice wood but getting hard to find.

The faces for the lower cabinets, machined out but not glue'd yet.

The first of the units assembled, birch plywood cases, far beter than particle board, these should outlast all of us.

Nice work Greg.

Elm is definitely getting hard to come by. We lost a huge American Elm last year. It was fine for the 20+ years we've lived here but got sick and died inside of a few months. Nice looking wood.

Most of the Elms in my yard are dead now, your right, once they show signs of trouble their dead i a couple of months.

Nice work there Greg. You can come and refit my kitchen any time.

I remember as a kid in the UK in the late 70's that Dutch Elm disease was a major problem. Here we just have pests that wait until the wood is in use in our houses before they start eating it.
