I don't think I would ever see anything come through my home shop that required a key that big. I do have a 1/2" broach, but it's a square broach. Because it cuts on all 4 sides it needs a round hole to start in. I really should pick up a few metric broaches though. Plenty of imports around here - tools, machines, cars.... But for now at least I think I will go with the 10mm - 3/8" stepped key idea. If I end up shearing off a key I can always re-cut the keyway in the ratchet later. Or just weld the ratchet to the pinion... depending on what kind of mood I am in after shearing off a key and busting my knuckles. And the method I am about to describe is in Fahrenheit , here goes , I was playing trivial pursuit last night the new edition and I got this question and thought of Willie straight away ,not sure I should have typed that ! Question , What can you tell about the weather by counting cricket chirps ? Answer , Temperature - The old farmer's Almanac suggests counting the chirps in 14 seconds ,then adding 40 to get the temperature in Fahrenheit Whats do you think ? ,no need for a thermocouple or black box Rob RE: Heat treat furnace - wawoodman - 12-20-2015 If it's a Canadian cricket, would it chirp in Celcius? I had to laugh at that for a "couple" of reasons, but mostly because I just went through that yesterday myself. I saw this posted on another forum and immediately thought of a guy I used to work with turning wrenches, that happens to have 2 dachshunds at home. I just had to email this photo to him and suggest he re-name his animals "Imperial" and "Metric". Is it better to trim a little from both sides of the key, or take it all off from one side? No engineering schooling on my resume. I'm just guessing one 90° corner (stress riser) is better than having 2? |
