RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - Brian - 11-02-2015 Hold on to your hat's lads the material for the cylinders and the heads will be arriving on Wednesday , Yarhoo. Brian RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - TomG - 11-02-2015 I'd be losing some hair thinking about cutting all of those cooling fins. Tom RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - Brian - 11-03-2015 Hi Tom. One of the uses of the jigs is to locate the cylinder firmly to the rotary table so I can cut the fins with a slitting saw on the mill. I did not fancy trying to do these with a parting tool on the 7X12, Just a step to far for me. Brian. RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - Brian - 11-04-2015 [attachment=12093] It's Arrived. now the fun begins. well that's the winter taken care of !!! Brian RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - TomG - 11-04-2015 Winter? I didn't think you guys had winter over there. Tom RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - Brian - 11-06-2015 Yes Tom we have Winter when it rains and we have to wear a coat . and we have summer when its to hot to move. and that's all. Work is progressing will post pictures later. Brian. RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - Brian - 11-08-2015 The first cylinder was made to prove the jigs . the remaining 4 will be made as a batch to save time and effort. First the blank is prepared to fit the jig. [attachment=12131] Then the holes for the studs are drilled. [attachment=12132] And the fins cut. [attachment=12133] the jig and cylinder is then put on the lathe and the bore roughed out. [attachment=12134] and the taper of the fins done. [attachment=12135] Final finishing to be done later Brian RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - Pete O - 11-08-2015 Great stuff Brian. I have always pictured the taper being cut before the fins, I learned something. RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - Mayhem - 11-08-2015 Nice work Brian. It looks like the work in building the jigs was time well spent. I'm looking forward to seeing this build progress... RE: 5 Cylinder Radial - TomG - 11-08-2015 Good progress Brian. I had envisioned the fins much thinner, hence my apprehension. Are you sure these will provide enough cooling? I've only built one IC engine but if I remember correctly, the cooling fins were about .07" thick. Tom |
