RE: Latest Delivery - RobWilson - 11-04-2015 I reckon machineable wax Rob RE: Latest Delivery - arvidj - 11-04-2015 (11-04-2015, 11:56 AM)RobWilson. Hopefully I'll be able to cook up a batch this weekend. RE: Latest Delivery - dallen - 11-04-2015 keep the lid for the pan close by, and don't do like some people have done when trying to fry a turkey RE: Latest Delivery - rleete - 11-05-2015 (11-04-2015, 10:04 PM)arvidj Wrote:(11-04-2015, 11:56 AM)RobWilson. Wrote: I reckon machineable wax Check out this article for some hints and tips: http://www.machinistblog.com/first-attempt-at-making-machineable-wax/ BTW, the plastic bags/milk jugs thing works well. It's a fair amount of work cutting it all up, but it's generally free. If you're anything like the rest of us old farts, free is a huge plus. RE: Latest Delivery - Vinny - 11-05-2015 I've made alot of machinable wax over the past few years. The plastic bags are the way to go. No need to cut or tear them up, they melt and mix in real quick. TIP: Watch the heat! Get it too hot and it WILL flash (I won't say exactly how I know but it involved 3rd degree burns). That electric burner won't cool very fast. If possible, do it outside and if it flashes, just unplug the burner and walk away. Make sure the flames don't spread, if they do use the garden hose or call the FD if it's that bad. But stay away from the pot of wax! RE: Latest Delivery - arvidj - 11-05-2015 Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas on cooking the wax. As luck would have it I was cleaning the basement several weeks ago and threw away a three year collection of plastic bags I looked on eBay and found 10 lbs of virgin HDPE pellets for $25 delivered so I just ordered what I am assuming will be a lifetime supply and was done with it. RE: Latest Delivery - arvidj - 11-05-2015 This came in today's mail ... thanks Russ. [attachment=12099] While looking thru the local FreeCycle site I saw an offer for a metal duct crimping pliers. It was free and on the way home so I asked it it was available. It was so I stopped by and picked it up. [attachment=12100] While I was talking the the fellow he asked what I would be doing with them and I mentioned that metal working was a hobby. He asked me if I would be interested in a vice. I thought "Why not?" so we went into the garage and he showed me this ... [attachment=12101] I asked how much and "We're selling the house, moving to a much smaller place, I can't take it with me so why don't you just take it out to your car?" was the response. I silently thanked my mother for not raising a complete idiot and took the vice out to the car. As I was walking out of the garage he mentioned he had some other things is the basement that he wanted to get rid of and he'd be right back. [attachment=12102] This also ended up in the back of the car. I thanked him profusely and then drove home. RE: Latest Delivery - Vinny - 11-05-2015 Well all I can say is ... One for each. Edit: Oops, just recounted.. RE: Latest Delivery - wawoodman - 11-05-2015 You should at least have taken him out to dinner... RE: Latest Delivery - Mayhem - 11-06-2015 What Vinny said! |
