I had a mill drill with a similar guard all it did was get in the way
Personally i would remove it and ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES
I have a couple of bits of perspex mounted on to magnets that i use to stop the swarf (especially when fly cutting)

Looks like bolting down is the way to go. I'l make sure that I've the mill in the final location before doing the work.

Hi Wong,
I guessed it was a Vertex, as that is the only Taiwanese machine tool accessory manufacturer that I am aware of. My local machinery shop sells those, as well as the cheap no-name brands and the more expensive brands. Of the name brands, the Vertex 6" vise is the only one in my price range. That is why I will be interested in hearing your thoughts and comments.

Hi Mayhem,
I was squaring up the vise a few minutes ago with a DTI mounted on a magnetic base sticked to the column of the mill. While running the tip of the DTI across the fae of the fixed jaw, I observed that even if both end of the jaw is within 0.01mm, the centre of the jaw face seems to have higher reading. I had a long day in the office and so didn't spend more than 15 mins in the shop.
Will do a proper check when I've the time.

I have my mill on stilts.

The mill does shake a little when I crank fast.
I also installed the iGaging scale on x axis. The bracket is just a piece of aluminium with drilled holes. Locating the holes took the longest time.

This piece of scale is the short one. I realized that I don't need to cut up the longer one which I'm setting aside for the lathe z axis. Besides, the travel of the mill is shorter than the scale. Also, it seems fine to leave the other end not fasten to the table. Seems to work well as it is.
Will be moving to the next 2 axes hopefully tonight.

The bigger mill (relative to my Sherline of course) makes milling aluminium so easy, making the process so much enjoyable.
