RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - EdK - 06-12-2017 Yup, I see them now. Ed RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - Dr Stan - 06-12-2017 Greg, Fantastic craftsmanship. RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - TomG - 06-25-2017 Got to work with wood AND metal today. Made a pair of bedsides for my brother in law's '66 Chevy pickup. He's always doing favors for me so I thought I'd return one. I'm heading Up North Wednesday, a day or two ahead of him, so I think there will be time to install them before he gets there. He has no idea this is happening. :) The wood is Red Oak, radiused on all corners and bolted together with stainless carriage bolts and hardware. Thought about springing for chrome plated hardware, but it would have cost nearly $100 for the 24, 5/16" bolts. Not that he isn't worth it, but stainless will never peel or pit. Tomorrow I get to take them all apart, sand them and put on a coat or two of exterior grade polyurethane. Tom RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - Vinny - 06-25-2017 Looks good!!! RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - Dr Stan - 06-25-2017 (06-25-2017, 07:26 PM)Vinny Wrote: Looks good!!! Tom BTW is there a Rural King anywhere near you? It's my to go to store for anything to do with fasteners as virtually all and maybe all are sold by the pound. Haven't bought any SS or Chrome but lots of Grade 2, 5, & 8 for way less $ than any other place including on line. RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - TomG - 06-25-2017 Thanks guys. Stan, there is a Rural King about a half hour away, the first one in Michigan. In fact, I was there just this morning. Definitely a fun place to explore, sort of like a Tractor Supply on steroids. I got the SS hardware from McMaster Carr. Not sure if it was cost effective, but it sure is convenient. Tom RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - f350ca - 06-26-2017 Nice touch counter sinking the nuts. RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - TomG - 06-26-2017 Thanks Greg, I did that on my trailer sides as well. It keeps things from getting snagged on them. There is a TSC 5 minutes or less from me. Instead I drive across town (15 - 20 minutes) to shop at RR. Menards is super close to RR so if I do not find it at one place the other usually has what I want. Works well for me. RE: Todays Project - What did you do today? - Roadracer_Al - 06-30-2017 Tom, first off, nice work! I apologize and hope this doesn't sound like criticism, it's not. Just sharing knowledge with the group. The wood to use for outdoor applications is white oak, not red oak. Red oak soaks up water and will rot quickly if not covered in a film-forming finish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6t2AZubF8U |
