I finally got around to shortening the DRO scale for the x axis. Measured, scribed and cut by hand with a hacksaw. The scale isn't as fragile as I had been lead to believe from the usual Google search and I can confirm that it will not explode if exposed to sunlight.
I supported the scale with a pair of long nose pliers and then nibbled at it with some small side cutters. The first nibble broke most of the waste piece off and it took one or two more to finish up. The scale is actually quite difficult to get to.
The most time consuming part of the process was drilling and tapping new screw holes into the extrusion. This is some low grade soft and gummy aluminium. I didn't have a M2 tap so had to go up to M3x0.5 The flexibility of a turret mill was appreciated during this process. I didn't have a counterbore to suite, so I simply milled the sections off the end block to suit.

Whilst cleaning up the other day I stumbled upon the y axis stop bar, rail and stops, so I gave them a clean up and a lick of paint and installed them.

In doing so I was also reminded that the access door for the coolant pump also needs the same treatment, as well as a new knob/handle making. Along with the z axis DRO scale, this is another task on the to do list.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to paint the raised letters in a different colour, without making it look like it was done by a 5th grader?

paint it white, within a week or two, it will look like crap and no one will notice. <mumble mumble > Its worked on my Jet equipment.

I painted the letters on the side door of my Fray black with an artist's brush. Take the door off and lay it down on a bench. Then determine the correct brush size and steady your hand with a piece of foam rubber, or similar material, under your wrist.
