RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - EdK - 11-21-2012 I'm still clueless. Ed RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - stevec - 11-21-2012 Ed, you don't have a monopoly on cluelessness! Greg will show us in the step by step manner we might grasp. RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - f350ca - 11-21-2012 Hope its making sense to some, its still a little fuzzy to me. No progress today, the Jeep needed attention, doing a brake job and oiling for the winter. RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - f350ca - 11-26-2012 Built a tool holder today. For 1/4 inch HSS. Will be able to set cutting and clearance angles. Should be able to set the distance and grind radius cutters as well. Will work on a spindle next. RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - EdK - 11-27-2012 Ah ha, the murkiness is starting to clear. Ed RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - sasquatch - 11-27-2012 That housing lying on your'e bench in the pic,, is that from a grinder? RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - f350ca - 11-27-2012 It was from an old ice skate grinder. Will pull it apart and see what it has for bearings, may be a good candidate. RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - f350ca - 12-01-2012 The ice skate grinder that Sasquatch spotter on the bench turned out to have tapered roller bearings in it, and was set up for 1 1/4 bore wheels. Has nice felt dust seals and a convenient flange mount to bolt it to whatever housing I come up with. Roughed out a disk to bolt metal backed wheels to and shrank fit it to the mandrel. Then turned it true with the shaft between centers, It was originally set up with two washers to hold the wheel. Can now use the metal backed or conventional cupped wheels. Interesting notes on the spindle. When I had it between centers where the bearings mount showed about 1/2 thou runout, not bad and the mounting dia for the wheel about a thou. Now mounted in the housing the wheel center shows 2 thou runout and the backing plate about 1/2 thou wobble. The bearings seem smooth but must not be true or the runout on the bearing points weren't in phase, never checked that. RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - 4R8 - 12-01-2012 I seem to remember you saying this will probably never get finished..... At this rate you'll have a shop of sharpened tools well before the new year! RE: Tool Grinder (maybe) - f350ca - 12-01-2012 Looks like I may have to shut it down for a while, have some people looking for a set of kitchen cabinets. Need to fund the toy rooms. Managed to get a pulley for the arbour made. Had a small automotive belt I think will work, one of the thin ones that still act like a V-belt. Aluminum body with a steel hub threaded in then everything machined off the OD of the hub. Could have used it to grind the cutter for the pulley profile, 17 deg on either side with a flat section in the middle. |
