2050? Aluminum/copper? 17428

I'm with Stan and would probably use 4140 myself. It worked a treat for me when I made the new ratchet ring for my arbor press - although I used annealed round stock and hardened it myself after machining it. I did make something else from 4140 PH too (chuck keys maybe?) and was surprised at how well it machined even half hardened. Have to say I like the stuff. Smile

Never laid eyes on one but apparently there are a couple of books available across the pond on them.

Looks like a nice bit of kit. Smiley-signs021

There are plans available for making your own.

Not Aluminum/Copper, this is some form of tool steel. When I found the info before, it was as hard or harder than 4140. I have a bunch of 4140 1" (and thicker) plate. This stuff came out of a tool and die shop that went under. If I find the specs on it, I'll post them.

RE: Quick Question Thread - Vinny - 10-04-2019

Twas a lot easier to find this time. 2050 is the product number of PCS, it's a tapped support pillar used in molds. The actual material is 1040. Here are the specs on 1040 and 4140:

1040: https://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=6525
4140: https://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=6769

The machinability of 1040 is 60, compared to 4140's 65. As to hardness, they are very close to each other.

It also has one other property that makes it better than 4140. I have 2": round 1040, I don't have 2" round 4140!!!

The sad truth is that a lot of the projects I've already started and bought materials for will never get finished as it is.
No point in me starting any more. Blush

That is a good property to have! Smile

And it's close enough for government work... Big Grin

Let me guess, you're at least partly Scottish.  Only 1% will make one squeeze every possible cent out of a dollar bill. Big Grin

BTW, I'm of Scot, Irish, English and German decent.  Genuine 100% mutt.

Polish and German - 50% each. Although my former business partner used to say something similar about me.

RE: Quick Question Thread - Highpower - 10-04-2019

50/50 Hungarian/Lithuanian. I'll spend top dollar (if I have it) on something I really want. My younger brother on the other hand is tighter than two coats of paint. Still don't know how that worked out. Rotfl

RE: Quick Question Thread - Dr Stan - 04-09-2023

Anyone have any recommendations for a home shop laser? I'm thinking 100 watts or so with a 600mm X 900mm (24X36) bed.
