RE: Annealed 4140 - PixMan - 01-14-2013 Expert schmexpert. I hardly know more than the next guy about anything, I just had read a lot on magazine articles while on the throne. ;) RE: Annealed 4140 - EdK - 01-14-2013 (01-14-2013, 03:46 PM)PixMan Wrote: Expert schmexpert. I just need to figure out how to edit it. I'll upload it tomorrow. Ed RE: Annealed 4140 - Sunset Machine - 01-15-2013 A bit of software called avidemux might be the editor you're looking for. Look around http://sourceforge.net and see what you can find. I was cutting at either .020" or .025" DOC, I don't remember which. After I made the video, I tried a DOC of .030" and the lathe just laughed at it. I got some iridescent blue chips that time. The finish I was getting sucks so I'll need to figure that out before I get to the final dimension. Ed EDIT: Changed to youtube. [attachment=4258] [attachment=4259] RE: Annealed 4140 - DaveH - 01-15-2013 "Ships", why are we talking about 'ships' - I know "another pass" - like "ships passing in the night" Well I thought it was good. Ed, that finish is typical of 'shearing' 'ripping' you need to up the RPM and the depth of cut needs to be at least the radius of the insert tip. That's my best guess Sometimes in the home work shop emery cloth can be useful to smooth the rough The video was good very clever - no utube DaveH RE: Annealed 4140 - PixMan - 01-15-2013 Dave is right, you need a LOT more speed to get the finish better. How fast does your lathe spindle go? Even at 2400rpm with a 1" bar of stock you're just getting into the recommended cutting speed for grade WPP20 on annealed 4140, so let 'er rip! It's just a guess, but it looks like you're running about 400rpm. If you're afraid to try it, start by upping it one step up at a time without cutting, just to see how it runs. You need to get a lot more heat in the cut to get a good finish. |
