Whoa....you also have a Victor 1640 lathe?
I guess I missed the photos of it! I have one as well, though mine is probably in worse condition than many. It was free for the cost of shipping so I don't complain. I've never thought to put mine on risers as never felt as though it was uncomfortably short for my 5'10" height. Not a bad idea though, so how much did you pick it up?

They are just some neoprene rubber that I bought from McMaster Carr. I need to make a couple of small blocks and either screw them or glue them to the back that fit into the table slots. They move around just a little bit, not bad, but enough that I want them to kind of "lock" into place a bit better. I notched around the mill vise bolts which helps to keep swarf out of the table slots as well but they do move more than I would like.

Thanks. When I fabricated it I wanted the mill table to be at a comfortable working height as I hated how low my last lathe/mill machine was. I lived with it like that for 17 years and swore I was going to set these up properly from the get go and make them comfortable.

Ed, I will have to measure the spindle height and post it. I don't currently have that available. Obviously measuring the table height is not an accurate measurement because it moves vertically, but I will measure the spindle height for you. I am 6'2" and don't find myself bending over at all when using the mill. Had it been a full-size mill I would have still raised it a couple of inches to be comfortable. Our BP clone at work is a 9x49 and sits flat on the floor but it is a bit low, yet you have to reach for the drawbar so in that respect I am glad it isn't any higher.

Thanks Mike and good point on the table moving up and down. I didn't think of that since I've never owned a knee mill before. The spindle height will have to do then. I'm about 5'3" on most days so the height is a concern for me.

Ed, I ran home at lunch and grabbed those measurements for you.
From the ground to the bottom of the spindle mine measures 55". This is sitting on a my base which is 8.5" tall.
At that height my table is in the 40"-45" for much of my smaller work.
I hope that helps you out on size/height.
