RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - krv3000 - 06-21-2012 a job well dun RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - stevec - 06-21-2012 Great work, Gruby. RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - Bill Gruby - 06-21-2012 Thank you. You guys ain't seen nuthin yer. Wait till you see the makeshift counterbore. "Billy G" RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - Bill Gruby - 06-21-2012 The brains of the assembly are parts E&G. They are held together with loctite. This assembly is fitted into the cap, the flange is in a counterbore. This assembly fits over the tube. The Nylon washer keeps it from binding. The cap is held on by 3 set screws. Now you have a unit that will turn in place. The bearing holder now screws to that. By turning the knob either way the holder moves in and out of the tube. Flats on the holder and the lock screws keep the holder fron rotating. Any questions yet? That little Horizontal Mill is a Ames. It has done a lot of work for me. Owned by a good buddy in the gear business. "Billy G" RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - Bill Gruby - 06-21-2012 Now we have to fit the tubes to the ring. See you in a bit. Since I have no mill I need my drill press ans a fixture. Wood to the rescue yet one more time. LOL "Billy G" RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - Bill Gruby - 06-21-2012 Let's drill and ream some hole,3 required 120 degrees apart. #1 locked to XY Table. #2 Position 1 Drill. #3 Position 2 Drill. There is a third. #4,#5 Adjustable reamer to +.005 of .625. #6 Fit is dead nuts. Billy G" RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - Bill Gruby - 06-21-2012 Now we counterbore those holes. I had a .875 Counterbore but no .625 pilot. I turned a piece of 5/16-18 all thread and press fit it to the C/bore. I then threaded the bearing holder onto it violla c/bore and pilot. C/bores are .250 deep to locate the tubes. "Billy G" RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - Bill Gruby - 06-21-2012 One more hole was needed on the ring ID for the single Clamp Screw. Next we will fit it all together (Ring, Base, and Tubes) and send it off to the welder. "Billy G" RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - Bill Gruby - 06-21-2012 Back from the welder AOK. "Billy G" RE: Quest -- A Good Steady Rest - doubleboost - 06-21-2012 Bill Looking very good Some very clever work going on there Great pictures John |
